I received the following inquiry recently:
John, could you recommend a book on candlestick interpretation?
It is my feeling that if you want to start a serious study of the Japanese candlestick charting technique and candlestick analysis you should begin with the book which introduced it to the West. That’s Japanese Candlestick Charting Techniques, by Steve Nison. This book first came out in 1991, but was revised a few years back. The original is the one I used when I first started getting involved in using candlestick charting and writing daily commentary based on it.
I actually had an opportunity to speak with Nison a while back. After I had written a candlestick focused article for Stocks & Commodities in about 1995 he actually called me up and we chatted a bit. I was still relatively new to the professional analyst game at the point, so it was somewhat of a thrill to have a well regarded guy like Steve calling me.
Nison also authored a somewhat more advanced book a few years after his first one, Beyond Candlesticks: New Japanese Charting Techniques Revealed. There’s quite a bit of overlap between the two books, but this second one does go into several additional techniques which are not covered in the first book.
